Lights of North Broad AR Tour App

North Broad Renaissance is a nonprofit organization looking to revitalize and create opportunities for businesses on North Broad street. The North Pole lights were installed in the median to bring public art and intrigue to that neighborhood. We were tasked with creating an AR tour app to incentivize tourists to visit major spots on North Broad Street, and to learn more about the Lights of North Broad.

About the App

The experience is a standalone app available on both Apple and Android phones. Users are encouraged to visit North Broad, and to complete an AR guided tour across six historically relevant locations.

To unlock a tour experience, the user must be on the block of the attraction. Then, the user can start the AR tour. Local NBC 10 news host Aunyea Lachelle appears and shares attraction history with you as your personal tour guide.

Accessibility

Upon testing the tour experience, we realized this would not be accessible to all due to the location and travel requirements. Additionally, hearing Aunyea from your phone could be difficult if you’re out on Broad Street. To solve this, we added an option to experience the tour stops off-location as well as a closed caption button on the AR screen.

App Pages

Above are all the app pages I designed. We were given the blocky text slogans from the North Broad Renaissance team, so I designed the app based on those vibrant colors.

Wireframes

Below are the original app wireframes. The final app stayed mostly true to these, except for the removal of the “Rewards” and “Color Key” pages and addition of the “T-Shirts” page. Unfortunately the lights are under maintenance at the moment, so they do not change colors.

Event graphics

I designed a few printed graphics for the launch day event on Broad Street - ground decals, a photo frame, and a large scale version of the map. I was thrilled with one surprise…. QR code cookies! Cute! I almost didn’t want to eat mine (but I did).
